Doesn't have to be a human companion, a smarter loyal dog will do.

I've been honored to have smart loyal dog companions, but I've also had a scatter-brained few who could get lost on their home turf, or couldn't figure out to run around the corner and check the door I was calling them from if it wasn't the usual door I let them in and out of the house by.
