Any construction Contractors in here?

Let me ask you.

My mother in-law had water damage in her tub/shower wall.
Shortened story...(details here http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028232628)

Insurance is paid. Everything is demoed. She wants a shower kit/stall installed.
I totalled up all materials needed...some drywall, floor tiles, shower stall insert, shower valve and hardware which came to about $3,000 ($2,000 for the insert)

The contractor knows how much we are working with (see details above) which is about $8,000 and claims they can't do the job on this tiny bathroom for $5,000.

When you factor overhead, labor, and profit isn't it about a 50/50 split for these with materials? If not, as I know this is a generality, do you think they can't do it for $5,000 or they just want too much?

Looking at this small job I cannot see why $5,000, above materials, is not enough.

100 hours do do the job seems way too high. I would suggest getting 3 or 4 other quotes.

Getting bids for home repair on some new social network site, can't remember the name. But seemed like a strategy worth trying.

That includes supplies but not tile or fixtures (tub, toilet, vanity, mirror, lighting).
