Is aluminum siding better than vinyl siding?

Is this one of those "they don't make it like they used to" things? My siding *looks* fine (It could use a paint job), but nothing is falling, etc...I think I could save thousands by just painting it. Does anyone ehre have any experience with this?

On the one hand, vinyl siding is made from PVC, so its production is not good for the environment. valerief Feb 2016 #1

That's about it.

Just paint the aluminum siding if it's in good shape.

ETA: Forgot about one advantage of vinyl: It's harder to make a permanent dent in vinyl.

I come from a restoration/preservation background. Maybe the house has wood underneath the aluminum. If so, leave it alone. You will preserve history.

and it expands and contracts with temperature change.

We bought our house with vinyl siding. I hate it. If I had money I'd tear it out and repair the stucco underneath.
