Electric stove/oven and hood

We have a 4 burner electric stove/oven. A basic Kenmore model.

Our tiny kitchen needs more openness. I have noticed that in the same model townhomes as ours neighbors have removed the fan/light hood to open up their space.

I'd like to remove mine but I'm wondering if that is a code violation here in California?

that without a hood you won't be able to vent anything your stove is producing. This can mean a lot of smoke and smells during some cooking and self-cleaning the oven.

If you don't ever use the hood, then this isn't an issue. If you do occasionally use it, think about whether it's acceptable to not have it during those times.

The house is an old one and predates them. If I ever steel myself to put up with a year of dust and filth and workmen clomping through, I'm going to have a huge hood with no cabinets above it, something to suck the heat out of the kitchen in summer at the very least and the reek when I'm reducing balsamic vinegar at the most.

If you do pull it out, you are going to miss it terribly, if only for the light right above the cooktop.

It might be better to pull out the little, useless cabinets and install a modern, lower profile hood.
