New Years' lunch

I don’t want to do another Ham. I have tried to make what my mom always made for holidays this past year and a half for my dad but I don’t wanna. Lol. If I cook mom’s menu, I hear how hers was better and if I do something different, it’s how she always stuck to tradition because “that’s the way it should be.”

I am making a family chocolate cake for New Years but that’s as far as I’ve gotten.

Any ideas? I’m a vegetarian but the only one in the family. And I don’t force them all to eat “fake meat” 🙄 on holidays and family days.

It's a southern tradition to eat BEPs on the New Year. And add turnip or collard greens for prosperity (green= money).

I am going to make pan fried chicken (have a nice 3 pound chicken in Freezer) to go with the BEP, Collard Greens and black skillet cornbread. I think I'll make a Gooey Coconut cake, a family favorite.

You could even make two of them, one w/ meat and one w/o. A fancy salad to go along-side. A couple of bottles of wine.

It’s obligatory to have roast pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes on NY Day. I hate sauerkraut.
I like the lasagna idea. Make 2 small ones, 1 with meat and 1 without.

This is is a recipe that I make a lot since the little kids in my (extended) family like it. One of the kids--who previously only ate white food (but not my homemade potatoes, though he would eat McDonalds french fries) actually likes yellow rice and is even acting curious about other things on the table.

INGREDIENTS
2 teaspoons vegetable oil (I use olive)
2 tablespoons chopped shallot
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 1/2 cups jasmine rice or basmati rice, well rinsed
2 1/4 cups low-salt chicken broth (or vegetable broth--I've used both but make sure it is low sodium)
1 teaspoon (scant) salt (reduce salt if using salted broth)
1/2 teaspoon (scant) turmeric

PREPARATION
Heat oil in heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallot and garlic; saute until just beginning to brown, about 2 minutes. Add rice, broth, salt, and turmeric. Bring rice to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed, about 18 minutes.
