What's for Dinner, Sat., Dec. 21, 2019

If you have a cold, you're not supposed to make your own chicken soup, right?

The RG is sick. I went out for ingredients for chicken soup with wild rice and by the time I arrived home, he had already made his own soup, despite having a horrendous chest cold.

Needless to say, it was a far better soup than I would have ever made. It had dumplings in it and the vegetables had been roasted and then pureed, along with the broth in which he cooked the chicken. How he did that in the 90" I was gone is a mystery to me. Roast vegetables? Puree them? Make dumplings? Whatta' guy:

So I made a salad: chopped pears, tangelos, sliced red cabbage using the mandoline, chopped cilantro, and toasted walnuts. The dressing was vinaigrette. Very colorful and I was pleased with the way it turned out. Along with the salad and soup we had multi-seed flatbreads and Rainforest crisps, the kind with the cranberries and raisins in them.

No dessert tonight; maybe a hazelnut chocolate bar later.

We're in Houston for the Landlady(!)'s niece's wedding. The groom's mother is hosting the dinner this evening. Apparently, she loves Mexican food so the menu will be along those lines.

It's a huge wedding so I'm glad they'll have margueritas!

We had a small ham early this week and I made a rich stock with the bones. I am making a pot of mixed beans in the stock with ham and veggies. Not quite ready yet, but that means there is time to bake some cornbread.

FLFC is eating his mini-burger he ignored last night. He is eating on his pillow next to me and pauses to growl at me so I know that it is HIS food.

Much like his master.

He's 12 years old. We gave him his forever home 7 years ago. He had lots of behavioural issues. He has been a lot of work. The food guarding is one issue we haven't been able to fix, only lessen.

He was rescued as he was neglected by teen owner...bought him from her. He has always guarded his food... I feed him separately. I have four dogs...all recues one way or another...two from my kids. And this dog is the smallest one- 10 lbs but rules the roost. The jack russell... three times his size will not mess with him. I even tried a trainer who said it is pack mentality. The little devil has growled at me ...his Mom who feeds him.

She was afraid and was abused badly. I used to drive to the park because the dog would not walk near the house kept trying to run inside. I worked harder on that dog than any I ever owned...complained about her on a daily basis. She was a runner would sneak out as she got older...and the kids kept letting her out. The final straw was she got out and chased a jogger in Wisconsin...I was furious...kids let her out...she had a way with folks and the cop actually blamed the jogger so we had to take her to the vet for six weeks (weekly)and pay a big fine.

I must have said she was going because on the last visit, when I arrived the nurse was crying. I was the last patient before a holiday and had wanted to go earier...so I asked why not call me for an earlier visit. The nurse was like, we wanted a few more hours for Lula to live... I was not putting the dog down. I never put any dog or cat down unless they were sick and there was no hope. The cop who ticketed us used to stop by for a visit...he loved that dog. She was 8 then and had five good years until her hips went. I miss that dog everyday although she was a pain in the ass for sure . She was my dog in the end and slept next to me every night. I was always concerned she would bite...fear biter but she never did.
