Anyone have one? Worth the cost? I love to cook and I've been thinking about getting one of these but I don't want it to be some expensive gadget that I never use. If anyone has any experience cooking with a tandoor oven I'd love to hear it.

(29,098 posts)What are you wanting to use it for? Bread or Meats?
Are you thinking of building one outside? It would be nice to have something that could double as a pizza oven.
I have made naan on my pizza stone in my regular oven. I think I remember seeing out door grill safe stones which would probably be a great substitute for a tandoor and less cost. I checked...Here's a link

(20,924 posts)I'm moving from a big city with a plethora of really good Indian restaurants, to a rural location devoid of any good Indian food for a 2,000 mile radius. Well outside of delivery range.
So, think me, what if I had a tandoor oven?? I could make shish kebob like a freaking pro!
And the more I googled Tandoor Ovens, the more I liked them. In fact, I liked everything except the price.
I'm celiac, so I don't really care for the bread portion. (Though I am fascinated by the way they just stick the dough to the side of the tandoor; that's really neat. If you have a subtle palate, I bet that naan is better than anything you can make in your oven oven.) But the high temperature (650º), and the way it would smoke and season whatever I wanted to cook, really appeals to me. Just wondering if it's worth the price. Or if I need a tandoor oven to replicate the wonderful cuisine I already love so much.
Right now, we're like "Hm, I'm hungry, let's order from [xxxx] and enjoy their wonderful Indian food." And soon we'll be "OH FUCK WE'RE 2,000 MILES AWAY FROM THE NEAREST INDIAN FOOD RESTAURANT SOMEONE KILL MEEEEEEEEE!!!!11"
That's what is driving this.

(29,098 posts)I am always astonished that Americans are fearful of doing it at home. Millions of Indians do it every day.
If we ate a great deal of meat I'd consider getting a Big Green Egg.

You can probably replicate many of those flavors you crave in one of these plus it gives you more versatility than a tandoor. Then again it probably costs about as much as a Tandoor.
