Cooking & Baking
Related: About this forumFood Network needs a major overhaul
Far too much of their programming is reruns. I can only think of a few series that show new episodes (Beat Bobby Flay, The Kitchen, Worst Cooks in America, Baking Championship, Kids Baking Championship, Food Truck Race, Next Food Network Star, Guys Grocery Games, Chopped).
I also get really sick of how every holiday turns into an excuse to focus on the food for that holiday. This week they're showing hardly anything that doesn't have to do with chocolate.
It'd be sweet if they had a program dedicated to fish and seafood, also one on vegetarian/vegan cooking. Maybe even one about using instapots and slow cookers. How about another dedicated to Asian Food?
Is it really that difficult for them to come up with something new?

(22,037 posts)It also occurred to me that none of the houses HGTVs star rebuilders remodel ever put a piano in the houses.
Just sayin.
I couldn't live in those book-free houses.

(354 posts)I agree there has to be more diversity. Thats why Chopped is the most interesting show on that network.
And yes they need to fire Guy. Hes just a dullard. I dont even record Guys grocery games because its dumb.

(4,112 posts)I want to be educated about cooking and food and couldn't care less how I might combine liver with chocolate pudding. (seriously - from this week's Chopped.) And don't get me started on Guy Fieri!!! He annoys me almost as much as tRump.

(6,251 posts)because food as competition is boring! I want to learn how to make something new, not how to cook six weird ingredients in 12 minutes.
On Saturday afternoons, I watch my local PBS stations, to see Lidia's Kitchen, A Chef's Life, America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Country, and Martha Bakes.

(16,334 posts)and halfheartedly at that. I don't even really know what shows are on anymore because I got sick of seeing Guy Fieri on everything.

(49,533 posts)That alone is enough in my book.
These older episodes they've been airing where current Alton revisits and revises some of the content have been awesome.

(13,904 posts)I want the theme song for a ring tone... Alton is kind of a dick but I like his explanation of the why's and wherefores of cooking... Kinda pulls it all together like Rachel's explaining politics... But she is not a dick... well of course she can't be a ........ you know what I mean..

(2,338 posts)The only new show Ive seen lately The Kitchen. I could tell because there was a mention of a current event. Other than that, Im tired of seeing marathon episodes of things like Guys Grocery Games and Chopped.

(2,243 posts)Time, budget, form, medium, whatever. If it MUST be a contest, get someone to judge a week worth of "Food in the Anthropocene: the EATLancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems" meals.

(2,674 posts)It's not about cooking anymore. Every food contest has wanna-be actors tying to break-in to TV, posing as cooks. Food Network is a joke and an insult to anyone who cares about good food and cooking.
I quit watching it years ago.

(34,393 posts)They used to have their own cooking shows, but now, they seem to air a couple of episodes then they're gone, never to be seen again. Oh, they may show up occasionally as a judge on "Guy's Grocery Games" or that stupid show that Alton Brown hosted with challenges that forced chefs to operate a blender by pedaling a bicycle or some such nonsense.
I started watching more of The Cooking Channel, but even that channel is migrating more towards hosts visiting restaurants that offer The World's Biggest Taco or other such places rather than instructional shows. I'll just stick to YouTube, I guess.

(2,674 posts)You could send a stamped self addressed envelope to your favorite show and they would mail you the recipes for the current week's episode. I always did that for Two Hot tamales, got lots of excellent recipes that way.

(27,812 posts)I get sick of chocolate too, but a big fat NO to more fish and seafood. "Top Chef" and "Chopped" rely on it too much. I can't eat either! "Top Chef" is worse; one team did appetizers a couple weeks ago that were ALL fish or seafood! It's maddening.
I would like to see more straight cooking shows, and maybe more vegetarian cooking (minus Portobello mushrooms).
LisaM
(27,812 posts)No, no, no. It's a huge problem how much there already is ("Top Chef" is worse).
