Pink Slime, yuck.....

The revelations about pink slime has me questioning the overall quality of foods found in our grocery stores. I recently found a butcher shop not too far from where we live. Because the cost of meat causes me angst every time I shop, I decided to purchase a month's supply of meats from the butcher so that I only have to buy produce, dairy and staples at the grocery store. I found that the cost of the meat at the butcher shop was pretty much in line with the cost of meat at the grocery store.

The meat from the butcher shop seems to be far superior to that found at the chain grocery stores. The ground beef does not pop and splatter when cooked and has a very good flavor. Even the breakfast sausage is lean and flavorful. I like to support local businesses over big chain organizations, so I plan to become a regular customer.

My experience with the butcher shop combined with what we're hearing about "pink slime" makes me wonder what other hidden surprises might be lurking in our food supply. I have no doubt that the food industry puts profit ahead of all else, so the incentive is there for other manipulations.

Do you have concerns about what is in your food? How do you actively seek out quality products?

It's disgusting and I refuse to participate in an animal's suffering Stop going to butcher shops, go instead to produce markets and all will be well!

But at age 64 ( my husband is 68), it's unlikely we will make that change. We are definitely carnivores and I'm pleased with the butcher shop I found. That said, I sometimes wonder about dairy and produce marketed through grocery stores as well. What chemicals were used to grow them? Is organic really organic? Hormones given to milk producing cows?

While we do have access to farmers' markets in the summer, for most of the year, we rely on the grocery store.

Buy beef and have the butcher grind it right there for you, or grind it yourself.

I haven't bought commercial ground beef for 20 years - since LONG before the whole silly "pink slime" kerfuffle. It's really unsanitary from a public health standpoint.

towards getting my meats from a local butcher. They call the different cuts of meat so many different things now... I'm never quite sure what I'm getting.

I have concerns about the entire food chain... In a perfect world, I would limit my shopping to local farmer's markets and not buy any processed foods at all.
