Nutiva Shortening

I made pie crust with this product for the first time. I used it in place of Crisco.

First, I decided to search for a substitute after looking at Crisco that hadn't been used for a while and found it to be ivory/yellow and rubbery. I researched online and found stuff that recommended against hydrogenated fat, period.

At the supermarket, I found a shortening that has red palm oil and coconut oil. It cost a little more, but it seemed to be what I was looking for.

I made the crust with a 1/2 cup each of the shortening and salt-free butter. The crust came out well as far as texture, color, and taste.

will get rancid after a while. I have found that out the hard way. I have no idea if refrigerating it will make any difference.

I just checked the use by date on the Crisco I bought last week, and it's "Best if used by Sept 13, 2019", just about two years from purchase.

A couple of times I'll go a very long while, as in well over a year, without using any of my Crisco, and then use it without bothering to check the use by date. Big mistake.

Other than that, I cannot comment on other shortenings.

Although a brief history is fascinating. Crisco was apparently the first solid shortening invented, and it came on the market in 1911. It was intended to replace lard, and was quite successful at that, so much so that I'm of the generation that assumes lard is nasty, stinky stuff, and I've never used it. Probably a mistake.

Anyway, glad you've found a product you like.

I'll continue to look for substitutes for Crisco because I'm concerned about the palm oil as an ingredient. Apparently rain forests are being decimated and being replaced by plants that provide palm oil. My forbearance may have no impact, but I don't want to be part of notable problem.
