Thought it was fruit flies and it kept getting worse even though we had no fruit, beer cans, etc that fruit flies love. Cheap and easy solution for drain flies: pour bleach down the drain, turn in garbage disposal.

My son had a science project which concerned breeding fruit flies. He bought home some to carry out the project. They got loose (naturally) and moved to the kitchen. I was composting at that time and putting my raw fruit and vegetable scraps in a bucket to carry out to my compost. I had a lot of trouble getting rid of the fruit flies.

I spray them with isopropyl alcohol whenever I spot one. (found this info at Bob Vila's website--works great) You can't keep them from coming in from outside. I have cats who want to come in but feel the need to pause and stretch when I open the door for them.

I made space at the bottom of the fridge for my compost bucket. It keeps better than in the room.

I had a bad fruit fly problem about two years ago, and learned of this cider vinegar solution. Made some of the traps up, put them around the kitchen, and in about a week or so they were all gone.
