Thanksgiving Recap...please add yours...

Ah, it was a lovely holiday and I was sad to see it end. Except I did get a little sick of all the food. Not the food itself, just having so much around which I guess is what makes it special.

1. Prep work on Wednesday made for a very smooth Turkey dinner on Thursday. Had a very relaxing day.

2. Having someone around who likes to chop vegetables is something to be grateful for!

3. Made too much stuffing. Made note to cut this in half next year.

4. Adding bacon to anything makes everyone think you tried a new recipe.

5. Teens can eat 10 to 15 dinner rolls in a day.

6. Brown sugar and butter will burn very quickly in a microwave. Use a damn sauce pan and the stove.

7. All those pyrex dishes I have and wonder why I have ARE NEEDED on Thanksgiving.

8. Had one crabby guest on an otherwise peaceful day. Plan to say we are going out of town next year.

How was your weekend?

1. Tuesday night was Mexican restaurant night. Playing "catch-up" with everyone.

2. Wednesday was kitchen prep day - need I say more? (I was the prep cook.) Last minute grocery shopping for stuff we forgot.

3. Thursday - EAT TURKEY!!! Also, my friend's Ma made a lasagna to boot, so we had that as "dessert".

4. Friday - helped my friend rebuild part of his deck - removed the dry-rot, replaced boards.

Hot tub and cocktails every night. Tons of "picking" throughout the day (finger foods).

No fights (hey, it wasn't my family, so I lucked out), no politics, lots of impromptu guitar jamming.

Good times!

My sister was already in Tucson (she lives in Kansas) and was spending the entire month there to help with our brother in that city who is blind, and needs various sorts of help from us.

About an hour out from Tucson I get a text telling me sister is in the ER. She had a very serious heart attack in 1989, and understandably has had various issues with her heart since then, including various procedures culminating in bypass surgery a couple of years ago. This time she had a-fib (I think that's how it's written), meaning a fast heart beat that's not at all normal. She was admitted to the University Medical Center, and with appropriate care, her heart went back to normal after nearly 24 hours.

So now, I had the privilege of fixing Thanksgiving dinner, which is something I actually love doing. Sister had gotten most of what was needed, and since the grocery stores were open until 5pm Thanksgiving day, I was able to get everything else that was needed. Mid morning I put the turkey in her oven, puttered around (three more visits to a grocery store, which included acquiring a goodly supply of wine) and mid-afternoon I brought my brother to sister's rented apartment. I'd just pulled the turkey out of the oven when sister called to say she was being released. Perfect timing, because there's no way brother could have monitored the turkey.

The only issue with cooking was that the stove in the apartment sister had rented was quite small. The turkey and pan did fit, but just barely. I'd brought my wonderful pan and rack with me (sister asked me to do so) and I did call the hot line for the turkey she'd bought to verify that it would bake properly in a small oven. I was assured it would, and it did.

Brought sister home, finished up the dinner, and it was delicious.

I also do a full turkey dinner at Christmas, and I expect that my older son will be here for that.
