i'm on the fence about doing a brisket because neither my dad nor my sister were really that into the idea.

We had made some tentative plans to have a birria cook off with friends, but we are just returning to civilization this afternoon and I'm not sure I can make it to the butcher in time.

There is a big gringo pot luck. This doesn't entirely appeal to me, but they will be giving out gifts to about 150 local children and that does appeal to me.

The big meal in Mexico is tomorrow night - Buen Noche. It is traditionally eaten after midnight mass and in very large groups, so that's an option.

Or maybe just stay home. I will definitely be annoying the whole anchorage by playing the Messiah very loud on Thursday morning, but maybe just lie low after that.

How about you?

Booked a room for myself on the coast for Wednesday, Thursday nights. Ocean view, hot tub, beach walks. Café next door. Great price - they had 2 unsold rooms that needed to be booked. One was for 2 people, one a solo. They cut me a deal on the single.

LOL, it's only 15 miles away but I went for it. Merry Christmas, pinto.

Dinner at my sister's on Thursday with a growing number of family and extended family. My namesake uncle and his wife, a cousin from Boston and his partner, two nieces and their families, assorted friends.

Latest I heard was roast crown of pork as the main dish. Sounds really good. And, I like having a room of my own down the road. Visits all around and time on my own.

Funny that you mentioned Buen Noche - my niece is making a big Mexican meal for the evening. Not sure if she gets the connection, but Christmas eve has always been our family's usual gift giving night - so it ought to be neat.

What's a birria cook off ?

All the best to you both! Health, happiness and all that. ~ pinto

It sounds wonderful and I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing time. There is nothing quite like having a room of your own down the street when the house is chock full of family.

Christmas dinner sounds great. Most of my family members are in New Orleans right now and I wish I could be there.

Birria is a Mexican stew, usually of lamb or goat, but you can use any meat. When done right, it takes two days of various stages of cooking. It is cooked until the meat falls apart and with the rich juice that is has been cooked in. You plop some into your tortilla and put whatever you want on top. It is amazing.

I just hope I don't give us food poisoning. I picked up the groceries, but drove a friend home, and ran into his mother, who wanted to talk shop since we hadn't seen each other in a half decade or so, and the groceries sat in the car for an hour and a half or so before they got refrigerated, and it was in the upper 40s at the time. They still seemed somewhat cold when I put them away, which I hope is a good sign.

Going to my sister's. Dinner will be a big rib roast (gift to my nephew-in-law from his meat supplier at the restaurant). I'm spending the night there to be up early to go to both nieces' -- first with the twins, then we all go to the triplets' for presents and breakfast.

In the afternoon, we'll go to my nephew's for dinner.

Merry Christmas, pinto! Enjoy your getaway.

Christmas Eve has always been the best time in my family. I enjoy that night, always saw it as Christmas.

And I will so enjoy my local getaway. Weather looks to be really good. Sunny and mild. And I have a new murder mystery to start on...

10. Because my kids have other family obligations on Xmas day, my plans:
Tue Dec 23, 2014, 06:09 PM
Dec 2014

I will visit one of my daughters early Am the day of Xmas eve. I told them I would bring dinner for Xmas eve. My grandchildren, who do not have school on Wednesday, will help me.

I bought 2 of the great Hormel cryovac pork roasts, have fresh green beans, fresh broccoli, salad stuff, potatoes to roast with the meat.
The kids and I will be making dessert. Ice cream cake roll. They will help me do all the preparations during the day.
Since I will be there early in the AM, I hope the time for the cake roll works but if not..we can do without dessert.

I will spend Xmas eve with one daughter and family, coming home in the AM as they will be going to visit other relatives for the day.

I have several things in mind for veggie prep, hope it is OK with the kids. Spicy green beans, spicy broccoli along with the meat and potatoes. Salad, dessert.

This may not be elaborate but I think the kids and I will have fun putting everything together. Their Mom and Dad will not be home until late in the day so we are on our own.
My other daughter will be visiting the family of her fiancé this year and I will be sad that they cannot join us.

The older you get, it seems the more you have to juggle schedules but I think this will work for us.

Merry, Merry to all and Happy New Year.

Bought 2 Costco hams, and everyone is bringing everything else. We have a pretty small house so it should be crazy!
