Shelf-life guide.

This is a really great resource for finding the safe shelf life of foods.

In my kitchen cabinet I found a sugar bowl that had been in there, unused, for over ten years. It was covered and full of sugar. According to this website sugar stays good pretty much forever and so it was safe to use.

That is so old, the company's address does not have a ZIP code. (Note to non-Americans, "ZIP code" is a postal code that came in during the 1960s.) I know there's still powder in it, but I wouldn't even think of using it. http://www.stilltasty.com says that it keeps about six months.

I have a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin that I bought in 1992, still about a third full. (No one in my family actually likes gin.) I tried some last month, and it tasted remarkably like gin. Once or twice a year, I will make sauerbraten, and I will put a tablespoon or so of the gin in the marinade.

I'd seen that guide before but had a hard time finding it the other day when I had a question.
