I would use white vinegar, btw...
vinegar brings out high notes of chocolate and makes a big difference in flavor, I have added it to all my chocolate baking recipes.

since all that stuff was rationed while in the Depression it wasn't. Anyone with a job could afford to make the real thing until the war started and eggs & dairy disappeared.

It's so simple to make, too. It's a dense very chocolatey cake that will thrill your taste buds and stay moist for several days. I frost mine with Peanut butter frosting. Yummy!

My family had some Depression era recipes that didn't use baking powder or soda. The one for pound cake was delicious and it was what I had growing up. I found it online, the only difference is that we added vanilla:

TRUE SOUTHERN POUND CAKE

2 c. sugar
1/2 lb. butter
2 c. plain flour (do not use self-rising or baking powder)
6 eggs
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, flour and lemon juice. Pour into Bundt pan.

Bake 1 hour at 325 degrees, then bake 5 minutes at 375 degrees.
