But decided to pop in here. I'm starting some blackeyed peas for new years. It is a good luck tradition from some where. I make split pea all the time. Should I flavor them the same? Do any of you cookers and bakers have ideas to make these dirt smelling critteres taste good?

Hamhock, onion, garlic, green pepper, thyme, celery and pepper. Cayenne to taste. Some folks add a spoonful of cider vinegar to their bowl.

I just boiled my beans for awhile on the stove top and then put them in the crock pot. (They still smell like dirt and asparagus juice.). I boiled a chopped onion, ham base bullion, some mixed long grain rice, sprinkle of corn meal, dash of vinegar, bay leaf, celery and chopped carrot, and course ground black pepper. I had a $1.49 per lb. ham butt, I stuffed in on top. We'll see. It better bring good luck cuz it is stinkin' up my house.

He soaks them, then puts them in a pot with all kinds of veggies: onion, carrot, celery, maybe a little potato. Black peppercorns and herbs like parsley, marjoram, or sage. He adds olive oil, too. His beans are outrageous. Nobody can make beans like he does.

I have some in the crockpot now and while I did all that, they still will not be as good as his. Close, though.

I am making a three-bean salad, but not for tonight.

And then gave them a hard boil, before the crock pot. The olive oil sounds like a nice touch.

Finally starting to smell like food.

Now, for the pesky left over turkey wings and legs....
