Anyone familiar with San Marzano tomatoes?

Cento claims their tomatoes are certified San Marzano but dont carry the DOP from the government. Are any of the DOP certified in major grocery stores? Are Cento just as good quality wise?

Thanks in advance.

They are the only tomatoes I use for gravy. I usually get them shipped from NYC. nt msanthrope Oct 2012 #7

The label would say D.O.P on the front of the label (down near the weight IIRC.)
I've used Centos in the past but I can't give an opinion on how they stack up to others these days because I don't buy canned tomatoes very often. I grow San Marzano types and even without the terroir they're head and shoulders above most Roma types for sauce use.

They claim to be certified by independent organization. I am not certain what the certification is of. Still researching. They show their origin and it is near San Marzano Valley but not in the valley.

Thank you for your input.

We buy them or DOP, depending on what's cheaper and available. Our Italian grocer often has Italian-market DOP San Marzanos cheaper than the Centos. I say "Italian -market" because the labels do not meet US standards and have stick on labels added to the cans.

I trust the Cento brand.

I trust the DOP

Either is okay with me. Both would be great!
