I'm trying a little play on grilled cheese and tomato soup--Jalapeño Popper grilled cheese sandwiches and Heirloom Tomato Salad.

chicken-fried steak dinner tonight. I'm going to make biscuits, mashed potatoes with gravy (almond milk and beef broth), a green salad with tomato and poached asparagus and either carrots and peas or corn. If we have room for dessert, I will serve Blackberry-Cabernet sorbet. Then, we'll snuggle on the couch and enjoy the lovely cool weather. Have a great evening, y'all!

It's really a snap to make, but kind of heavy on the % of fat, even if it doesn't taste like it. Enjoy this beautiful day! (it is on the East coast--hope it is also wherever you sail today.)

was at a no-name joint attached to a gas station in the middle of Mississippi. I found heaven, and it was served by a lovely, grandmotherly woman named Lucille.

We were passing through on our way to New Orleans. We stopped for breakfast, and I had the chicken fried steak and eggs. It was in one word... "Brilliant"

Have you ever checked out Roadfood.com? It's hosted by a couple who travel the backroads in search of delicious local food. We took a long road trip last year and had some amazing meals at places that we would have never known were there.

Do you remember where you ate in Mississippi? We will be going through there next Spring and I would love to check it out.

But it was so long ago. We were on either 20 or 59 and needed gas and food.

Lucille reminded me of my great aunt Barke. She was about 6 feet tall, and dressed exactly like a bottle of "Aunt Jemima" bottle of syrup. The stereotype was palpable.

She insisted on trying to feed us all of east Mississippi before we left. My great aunt lived to 103 years old. I wish twice the blessings on this woman. Her food was amazing.

It was in a rural town and had a tiny little sign outside the house in which it was located.

There was a picture of a lighthouse on it. This exact same picture had been reprinted and framed at least seven times inside the place. Odd, particularly considering that it is nowhere near any water.

There was a small window into the kitchen where a woman of at least 80 was doing the cooking. There were no menus and all beverages were self serve off the counter or the refrigerator.

We had a big meal of biscuits, gravy, eggs, ham, hash browns and fruit. Afterwards, we asked her how much and she said $6. My husband said, "Each?". She looked embarrassed and said, "No, that will be the total. Is it too much?"

There were three of us!

Have some leftover lo mein from last night's dinner out. Will make some chicken and broccoli stir fry to go with it tonight, as the broccoli looks like the first thing that needs to be cooked.

Heading back up the coast to our very private and lovely harbor. We are full of water, food and have emptied the holding tank!! \

Life is perfect.

Our summer has been so perfect that I am afraid to learn what winter holds for us. I live in a place where there was a significant flood about 15 years ago. Gotta keep that in the back of my mind.
