My black eyed peas are soaking & I'll slow cook them tomorrow to bring

good luck for the new year. I'll cook them with the big ham bone from Christmas dinner, and then add the sausage and more ham a couple of hours before they are done, and of course spices. Anybody have a good recipe? Happy New Year All. DU is the BEST.

I do use some Andouille sausage, but also a bit of ham. These are REALLY garlicky so if I'm not prepared to smell up the house for the next day or so, I might cut back a bit.

I had some Madras Lentils for dinner and though it was not yet midnight, I hope they will carry me through and make 2023 a far more fortunate year. All the best to you and yours as well.

Polish Sausage so, in honor of my sainted Polish Mom, it's going in the black eyed peas. I don't often drink but I've had a hard Kombucha AND a glass of wine for dinner - Holy Smokes, it's getting wild. Thanks for the recipe. Happy New Year!!

So tender, so much tastier, and cut up the shoots (little immature pods), with them. Ham or bacon, and onions.

Wish I'd frozen some.

but it takes a few days for the flavor to really develop. So I kinda miss the ham hock that would normally accompany.

When I grew up on a suburban farm we grew black eye peas. We would pick the mature peas and the undeveloped ones (snaps) we would freeze them and use whenever we wanted them. The snaps are my favorite!

They’re getting harder to find with the snaps though at the stores. PictSweet Farms is the brand I currently buy.

They are also referred to as field peas and cow peas. A lot of history to black eye peas. Slave owners wouldn’t touch them but let the slaves eat them.

This year I added frozen cut okra and they turned out so delicious. I do not add any meat to mine, but tomatoes work, but this year no tomatoes since I didn’t have any in my pantry. But I did have homemade salsa, so I added that on top, and cornbread as a side.
