Arguing with SO over tmj treatment

Its very expensive. Like massively expensive. We got a 2nd opinion. My SO sat in bc I wanted another set of ears. This guy was more expensive than my primary. I'm looking for someone to comfort all my fears and concerns. My SO remembers the 2nd opinion saying keep wearing the chewing splint for 9 months.

When I try to talk about my concern, he goes nuts and talks about the price "cleaning him out" financially. He seemed onboard in the past with my treatment. Now he just gets angry like I'm expecting money. He did pay 7k for the splints.

Nothing I say will stop him now from going ballistic. I mentioned selling a bit of stock, and he went nuts about being taxed on it. If he wasnt paying the bills, and I had more money coming in, Id leave.

He smokes and drinks and looks awful half the time. I'm sick of it, but stuck.ETA MY STOCK. Just spoke to him again about needing comfort. He says its my decision. Which it is. Its just crushing. He says thr restorative dental work may not even work. Just keep wearing the splint. I don't know what to do

might love a patient with your condition to help students learn? Start calling around Monday. And don’t give up. Call every dentist in your area to get the word out. Networking works! Take care of yourself. Leave your SO out of it. Best wishes to you

If the stock is yours and you have enough to cover the procedure plus any tax liability I’d say ultimately the decision is yours to do it now or try the splints for 9 months and if doesn’t work go for the procedure or if you didn’t hear the same thing your SO did, I’d call the DR and confirm that his recommendation was to first wear the splints. It would be wonderful if your SO was able to provide more emotional support but it sounds like that is something he can’t or won’t do.

I’m very sorry you are trapped.

Is this TMJ specialist discussing TMJ surgery as the treatment plan?

If it's too intrusive a question, apologies.

7k. Phase 2 in my case is raising up back crowns so they meet. He said worst case scenario is 32k with veneers. I'm extremely worried about that. I was down with the back crowns at 25k. The extra has me worried.

Shop around.

That night guard/splint fee is ridiculous - even including all the diagnostic impressions/models and planning.
Labs only charge about $200 for the appliances.

Around $2k per crown is about the going rate. And that is too much, imo.
The lab fee for the crowns is less than $100 per crown, unless they are all-ceramic (zirconia for back teeth), where the lab fee might be $150.

Definitely shop around.
Get all of the diagnostic materials this DDS has made. They are yours, if you've paid up front diagnostic/office fees.
Take them to any prospective doctors you might be considering.
Pay attention to the complete treatment plans.

All the best, glad to answer any questions, if you'd like.

And he said the dr is not telling me anything outrageous. I'm at a loss at this point. TY for the information though. The second guy said it could be 40k sometimes. I think I'm going to have to live with it and hope for the best

I hate the way health insurance doesn't apply to dental issues. Obviously your jaw should be considered a medical issue.

You shouldn't have to be in pain. I hope this treatment takes care of that. I know it is terribly expensive, but if it helps prevent the pain, it will be worth it.
