"Call the Midwife". Really?
I usually like most so called chick-flick type movies. But I couldn't make it through the first episode of this series. Got tired of seeing women in pain and birthing scenes. Did anyone enjoy this series? And I'll add that I love most anything British.

(4,033 posts)It really is a good series and watching the midwives struggle and grow and come together, and watching the nuns actually being Christian and non-judgemental at the same time is wonderful to watch as well. Please give it a chance.

(10,237 posts)Then things get funny and warm and the cast is outstanding .I like the way British stuff is shot so that everyone isn't perfectly posed and sexy .

(20,886 posts)It would be a great series without all the birthing stuff. But then that would defeat the purpose.
I have stuck with it mainly for the great British actors, but if you can get past the birthing and look deeper, it addresses the sociological problems of the time. They are now moving into the era of birth control and women taking charge of their bodies and their destinies. Get yourself a cup of tea when they're popping out the wee bairns, and look for the underlying message.

(48,217 posts)but like a lot of British dramas, it's character-driven rather than plot-driven. So yes, you see a lot of babies being born, but the interesting part is the way the midwives and the nuns change and grow and the back stories of the various parents of the babies.
As Gene Siskel used to say about movies that he like, "You start to care about these people."
