A REDUX: "Rare Birds" a Canadian Film as Rec here...& Since Audubon doing Count

this week with other birder sites...thought that some here might enjoy it. I got the Rec. from here...but, it's way back on archives...still some folks might love this for a weekend break view.

It's really something "different." (BTW I've always had mixed reactions to William Hurt as an Actor...but in this he is so superb you FORGET that it's William Hurt!

RARE BIRDS

3.1 stars

In this outstanding independent comedy, down-and-out restaurateur Dave Purcell (William Hurt) is ready to close his doors, until his friend Alphonse devises a wacky plan. They fake a sighting of a rare bird, and soon the place is filled with bird watchers, famous folks and a potential love interest. But Alphonse has another not-so-benign scheme that could put Dave behind bars and close the restaurant for good.

---------------

This film reminded me of a genre I primarily associate with independent English films (like "The Englishman Who Went up a Hill But Came Down A Mountain&quot although here there's a bit more farce involved - plus it's a Canadian production. The film concentrates on the 2 main characters, with the love interest a distant, albeit attractive, 3rd. Although the film hints at dark events and there's even a shootout of sorts, it's really a character study of Dave Purcell and his crackpot friend, replete with fairly thick Newfoundland accents. Everything else, even the hordes of birdwatchers and the RCP fade into the background. Shot in a beautiful, if windswept, location, the DVD includes a very interesting commentary.

My dad watched it on HBO about 10 yrs ago, and he loved it so much he couldn't stop talking about it, even bought me the movie so I could watch it. It was a lot funnier than I thought it was going to be, and Alphonse is the shit.
