Haven't had a TV or been to the cinema for ages & need recommendations for recent movies

I've just got a TV and DVD player and want to do some serious DVD shopping. I used to watch a lot of movies and was quite up to date until about 5 years ago. So, I guess that's what I meant by 'recent', for want of a better term.

As far as genres are concerned, I really don't mind, as long as they're a good movie. I do draw the line at soppy romances, but my wife loves them so will take recommendations for them too.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions... T

Oh, and am looking out for good TV series, too. I just had a Homeland 1&2 marathon and thought it was awesome!

The above are series we've loved.

Movies we've enjoyed.... (warning - mostly foreign, and pretty heavy duty!) These are those we got as Netflix DVDs that I rated the highest over the past 5 years.

Death at a Funeral (the British one)
Pan's Labyrinth
Persepolis
The Visitor
A Secret
I've Loved You so Long
The Reader
Into the Wild
Goodbye Solo
Cherry Blossoms
Bright Star
August Evening
Departures
Pirate Radio
Revanche
The Secret in their Eyes
Everlasting Moments
Fair Game
Tree of Life
Melancholia
Samsara
Moonrise Kingdom
Searching for Sugarman

I like heavy duty and will check them out on IMDB.

I saw The Reader the other day after borrowing it from a friend and thought it was very well done and thought provoking. I guessed what was going on early - which is a bad habit of mine - but won't say any more to avoid spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Thanks again.

they are the multiplex-only, shoot em up, no subtitle types for the most part. The very pictures they avoid are the ones my wife and I crave.

Music, movies, the arts all enhance our lives so much when we give them a chance!

Winners and also rans, which are frequently better than the winners.

TV: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Warehouse 13, White Collar, Damages, Nikita, Doc Martin.

Scroll back through this group and look at the recommendations.

recommendations.

I use rottentomatoes.com a lot to find things that might interest me. Don't know if you plan to sign up for Netflix, but they do a pretty good job of making suggestions after you rate things you have already seen.

Bottom line is, there is so much out there it is overwhelming at times. Much of it is garbage, but there are roses as well.

Good luck!

You can search even if you are not a member. There is an option to search by ratings ...5 being highest.
Tv series and movies all included in the ratings.
and some 3 star movies are good, but were not rated high for various reasons.
