Related: About this forumProbiotics 'may help when on antibiotics' study says
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22717273People who are on antibiotics may benefit from taking probiotics at the same time, a review of evidence shows.
Scientists at the Cochrane Collaboration say taking the supplements could prevent diarrhoea - a common side-effect of many antibiotics.
They looked specifically at cases of diarrhoea caused by the potentially dangerous Clostridium difficile bug.
Experts say probiotics could be a "pre-emptive strike" to ensure a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.

severe gastritis at least thats what they said was caused by one antibiotic. The take with food warning should include probiotics.

(108,903 posts)2. Three die after catching new C. diff strain in Scotland
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-22378210
Three patients in Scotland have died after catching a new strain of the Clostridium difficile (C.diff) bug.
All three were in the same health board area and two of the patients were in the same hospital.
Health Protection Scotland (HPS) said it had identified a novel C.diff strain, designated ribotype 332.
HPS said the deaths were the first reported cases in the UK and worldwide and that health officials had been put on alert.
***my elderly father had a very difficult time with c. diff. after being in the hospital/rehab and on antibiotics.
until we got it under control -- it was pretty horrifying.

(23,573 posts)3. The weird thing about c diff is that "fecal transplants" work
and it's gotta be pretty cheap to do it and it's pretty weird

(70,260 posts)5. dont you think this "technology" would be the next big thing
if it weren't so creepy?
i am very curious how this will pan out, and if it will support the theory that chron's disease and others are caused by living too clean.

(23,573 posts)6. They are doing it at the University of Chicago Hospital for people with C diff
and maybe for other diseases, too. I think it might be the next big thing.
