Triaminic, Theraflu Recalled After Children Poisoned

The pharmaceutical company that makes Triaminic and Theraflu recalled 2.3 million units of cold and cough syrups after four children opened the child-resistant caps and accidentally poisoned themselves.

The child-resistant caps don't work in some cases, and a child can remove them even with the tamper-evident plastic seal still in place, according to a statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency charged with protecting consumers against accident-causing products. Novartis Consumer Health Inc., the pharmaceutical company, recalled six kinds of Theraflu Warming Relief syrups and 18 kinds of Triaminic syrups. For a full list, click here.

Of the four poisoned children, one needed medical attention. Eight other children could open the caps but did not ingest the syrup, according to the commission.

"It's really common," said Dr. Donna Seger, the executive director of the Tennessee Poison Center and a professor at Vanderbilt University. "Cold and flu medicine are one of the top exposures that children have in the U.S."

1. Probably a good idea to keep all medicine

out of children's reach. As a kid I could always open those child proof caps.

3. Medicines and children do not get along.

The worst are the fucking candy-flavored vitamins. Some vitamins, or so-called supplements, are not water soluble so they can become toxic. All vitamins and supplements are medicines and should be kept away from children, especially when the stupid manufacturers make them taste like fucking candy!

4. My cousin ate almost an entire bottle of baby aspirin back in the 1960's, cause they tasted so good.

He wouldn't share, was a puke even at age 3 or 4.

5. Agreed...

and would add that over-praising a child for taking nasty-tasting medicine can have its dangers. When my mother was about 3 she was given quinine, which apparently tastes horrible (I've never taken it) and her mother kept telling her what a 'good girl' she was for taking it. Then one day she did something naughty and wanted to make herself into a good girl, so she swallowed about 30 quinine tablets, and was rushed to hospital having convulsions. Obviously she recovered, or I wouldn't be here, but she was always careful to keep medicines out of my reach when I was little!
