Dengue 'Breakbone Fever' Rising in Carib, Cases in FL, TX, CA; Zika, Trop Diseases

- 'Caribbean Matters, Dengue Cases Are Rising and Not Just in the Caribbean,' Daily Kos, Nov. 16, 2023.

As winter looms and recent reports indicate an uptick in dengue fever cases in Miami and greater Dade County, Florida, people here in the states must start thinking about mosquito-borne illnesses.

There have also been cases in California and Texas, which some scientists are attributing to climate change.

No longer are we be able to ignore reports of dengue in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, just to name a few Caribbean current hot spots, and wave it off as an “over-there problem.”

This news is being reported as December, January, and February approach—peak time for tourist travel to the Caribbean, as folks in the global North seek to trade that local cold for a brief escape to a beachy paradise. And as the Associate Press notes, “the U.S. market drove more than 50% of arrivals to the region last year with 14.6 million U.S. tourists visiting.”...

but news about it was overshadowed by all the Covid stuff.

Unfortunately, it appears that immunity was only partial and safety was a concern.

All tropical diseases are on the move and will likely make the southeast US less attractive as a place to live.

Eliminating mosquitos is a bad idea, fish stocks rely on the larvae as a primary food source.

I was really hoping the vaccine would pan out. Dengue scares the hell out of me.

it's really expanding. Same for other viruses and diseases that are increasing and migrating. What a world.

which is good, but I agree that they really need one for dengue because it seems to be extending its range the quickest.

I'm just glad dengue isn't expanding here in NM, although I'm sure it will eventually show up near the river. It's so dry here that mosquitos need to be a few hundred feet from the river in order to breed, standing water evaporates too quickly elsewhere.

Eventually the world's #1 problem will be climate change!

And the #1 cause of climate change?
People. Too many of us.

to face the music. It's mind blowing, the plague of Justinian and such are trivial compared to what's ahead.

Not to mention what we've done to other species and the earth.
