Large for-profit Catholic health care system buying up NJ non-profit Catholic hospitals

The nation’s first for-profit Catholic health care venture could make an offer to acquire St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson as early as this week, a deal that could bring millions in tax payments to the cash-strapped city annually, a councilman said.

A for-profit Catholic health care system may make an offer to buy St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center this week that could add millions to city coffers.

Ascension Health Care Network, a joint venture between the nation’s largest Catholic health care system and a private equity firm, is also negotiating with St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic and St. Clare’s Health System in Morris and Sussex counties for a potential network of seven hospitals.

The joint venture between the non-profit Ascension Health and Oak Hill Capital Partners is unique — it will retain each hospital’s Catholic mission while operating for profit. The emergence of Ascension introduces a new model of for-profit care in New Jersey, which is undergoing a sea change in hospital ownership. Increasingly, for-profit companies are buying up non-profits, and smaller institutions are aligning with larger networks to remain viable.

Catholic hospitals will not allow ANY form of family planning and birth control. If you need a vasectomy, tubal ligation, or any other form of reproductive surgery you cannot get one. If you have a tubal pregnancy you will have to wait until it ruptures. If you are pregnant and it is killing you you will have to die first so they can save the child.

So if you are a woman and go to a Catholic run hospital all you can do is pray.

Since the Catholic Church and all the other fundynutzy religions do not want ANY birth control for anyone in the country they will simply buy all the hospitals and that will take care of that. And if "personhood" takes hold and a woman has a miscarriage the Catholic hospital will just turn her medical records over to the local DA.

concept of a for-profit Catholic hospital. It seems to me that that is a far greater breach with Catholic ethics than any form of contraception!

There are a lot of good people who work there and it's hard to be a viable urban hospital. Especially in a not so affluent neighborhood.
If the deal goes through I hope it helps give them some breathing room and doesn't try to make it a profit center.
