Map: Vaccine-Preventable Outbreaks

This interactive map visually plots global outbreaks of measles, mumps, whooping cough, polio, rubella, and other diseases that are easily preventable by inexpensive and effective vaccines. The Global Health Program at the Council on Foreign Relations has been tracking news reports on these outbreaks since the fall of 2008. This project aims to promote awareness of a global health problem that is easily preventable.

1. These parents are not making decisions about their bodies but of a young innocent child

These are some of the same parents who "homeschool", another doubtful decision. I doubt many of these homeschoolers qualify to teach all the subjects needed to have a well rounded education. Protecting them from bad things in life, probably the bad things in their lives will be the parents.

who HOMESCHOOL and not all HOMESCHOOLING PARENTS don't vaccinate.

Please do not stereotype.

There are many good reasons to hs and many many many liberal secular people hs for reasons that have NOTHING to do with religion!

If you hs properly you don't HAVE to KNOW EVERYTHING! The resources out there are astounding - especially with computers. There is still the libraries and a network of hs'ing parents - some of whom have degrees like a Masters in Mathematics, or Physicists, or Chemists. Or local universities, museums, or other organizations that have classes on subjects of interest.

FWIW - my child was a "self-directed learner" - I was more of a facilitator than a teacher. That's what worked for him. It's actually what he did when he did attend "real school" - because he was so far ahead of everyone else that the teacher didn't have time for him anyway.

Then when he went back to an alternative highschool - the teaching style there was - you guessed it - self-directed learning. The trained public school union school teachers acted as TADA - FACILITATORS for these kids (not all of whom were gifted. In fact, not even most. They were just "different". Different enough that they couldn't participate in the regular public schools for fear of bullying and other negative behaviours.

Please, you have no idea what's involved in hs'ing and you don't know the people, the methodology, or the outcome. Are there some parents who should not be hs'ing? You bet. Just like there are SOME "teachers" who have absolutely NO business being anywhere near a school!

Of all things to demonize, why did it have to be vaccines?

I wish they picked country music as the big, scary, evil thing giving kids autism. There is just as much evidence for country music causing autism as there is for vaccines causing autism.

in cases of these preventable diseases. I'm willing to concede that there may be some possible risk to some children from some vaccines. I have been really surprised at how many vaccinations my grandchildren and great grandchildren receive when compared to the number that were recommended for my children, born during the 60's and 70's. However, the risks of not vaccinating is so much higher that I cannot defend those who leave their children, and the people who associate with them, at risk of contracting one of these serious diseases.
