Child dies of untreated ear infection; parents charged with manslaughter (they used herbal therapy)

The March death of a Bradford County toddler resulted from an untreated ear infection and could have easily been avoided, according to her autopsy report.

The parents of 18-month-old Hope Elizabeth Delozier face criminal charges in connection with her death following an investigation by state police at Towanda and Bradford County Coroner Thomas Carmen.

Ebed Delozier, 29, and Christine Delozier, 34, were charged Wednesday with felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children.

...snip...

A simple antibiotic to treat the ear infection would have saved the victim's life, Terzian added.

The child's mother, Christine Delozier, told investigators that she didn't believe in vaccinations or other aspects of modern medicine, not because of any religious beliefs, but from her own upbringing and her own research.

The mother told hospital staff she treated Hope Elizabeth with homeopathic remedies and herbal therapy, according to the affidavit.

She would stand a much better chance of getting off. Without Jesus as a backup, she's toast.

funny about that. It's OK to let your child die due to religious idiocy, but regular idiocy is criminal.

Although I seem to remember a couple being charged a while ago for the death of their child after they used prayer instead of medicine.

when they say- well, what's the harm?
even when you are talking about a chronic condition, getting into that mindset leads to a lot of sloppy thinking.

Such tragedies used to happen all the time before modern medicine: see the many tombstones to young children in any old graveyard. It's almost unbelievable that parents would reject modern lifesaving treatments.

My four year old suffers multiple ear infections yearly. The pain from them often comes on suddenly (and in the middle of the night), resulting in a night of no sleep and constant crying. They are painful! How a parent could ignore that and treat with herbal therapy is beyond me. Painkillers and antibiotics take only a half a day to start kicking in and kill the fever and pain. How a parent could let their child suffer so much as to die from something so easily treatable?????? UGH!
