In a recent report from CBCs Market Place, anti vaccine hysteria isnt just a phenomenon in the affluent neighborhoods of Southern California and the East Coast, its termites have also spread to North America, namely Canada, eh.
Using hidden cameras, undercover reporters visited several Canadian homeopathic practitioners who reassured parents that measles and other highly contagious diseases are really no biggie, and arent worth the risks (all debunked, but who cares?) that vaccines pose.
Estimates suggest that up to 40% of Canadian 7-year-olds are not up to date on their vaccines.

In the report, one homeopath said that vaccines are risky because Babies are getting too much stimulation of their immature immune systems, while another explained that measles is really not a dangerous disease, and yet another adding that if a child is over 1 year-old, then [measles] is actually a fairly harmless disease.

(698 posts)The pediatrician told my parents afterward that he had never seen a case as severe as mine in which the patient survived. In fact, we learned years later that he had made out my death certificate, leaving only the date and time blank, since he considered a fatal outcome inevitable.
In fairness to homeopaths, though, the positions taken here are (in my experience) extreme.

(23,156 posts)got measles, mumps, chicken pox, and so on, I will admit to thinking of those things as relatively harmless childhood diseases. But I do recall being fairly sick when I got those things, and staying in bed with a fever and rash or whatever.
I just got done reading a book about the four daughters of Nicholas, the last Czar of Russia, and at one point they all came down with the measles and were quite sick for a long time. It surprised me, but points out that it's not totally harmless. Yeah, they did recover, and I suppose they were never in danger of dying, but they were still quite ill and bedridden for weeks.
