North Dakota scored a major reproductive rights victory last week when a federal judge overturned a proposed “Heartbeat Law,” which sought to ban abortions at six weeks of pregnancy.

But the laws restricting women’s access to abortion care in North Dakota remain the toughest in the nation. Women must travel by car in the largely rural state sometimes up to 9 hours to receive an abortion at the only facility still standing, Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo.

Tammi Kromenaker has been running the daily operations of Red River since it opened in 1996. Before then, she worked at the only other clinic in North Dakota, which closed in 1998. She shares what it’s like for patients and staff.... MORE
