Thirty-two percent of people would support one.

Other findings from the poll:

• 38 percent of respondents say they support full marriage rights for same sex couples. That's up from 36 percent in February and 33 percent in November.

• 29 percent of respondents oppose any legal recognition for same sex couples. That's down from 32 percent in February and 35 percent in November.

• Support for civil unions or partnerships for same-sex couples, but not full marriage rights, was at 29 percent. That's point higher than in February 2012.

The poll comes about a month before May 8, when North Carolina voters will consider this amendment to the state constitution: "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

The poll was conducted March 26-29. It surveyed 534 North Carolina residents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.24 percentage points. The polls includes all residents, not just those eligible or likely to vote.
