The mother of one of the heroes who prevented terrorists from crashing Flight 93 into the White House is taking Carson Daly to task after the host of "The Voice" joked on his radio show that gays would not have been able to stop an unhinged JetBlue pilot.
(snip)
"Yes, my gay son was known in our family for bringing me flowers on my birthday and Mothers Day," Hoagland told TMZ.com. "He also was known for careening down the rugby pitch, and, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, for charging unarmed down the aisle of a doomed Boeing 757 to face knife-wielding Islamist thugs in a hijacked cockpit."
"No one among his pick-up team of fellow passengers was asking, 'Are you straight? Are you gay?,'" she said in the letter to the gossip site, adding that no one onboard doubted her 6-foot-4 son's ability to be an asset charging the hijacked cockpit.
"The world has its share of strong, heroic gay men," said Hoagland. "Gay men in sports uniforms and military uniforms have been winning Americas games and fighting Americas battles for a long time: quietly, humbly, and in the face of vicious bigotry."

(3,687 posts)his name, in the context of bravery and patriotism, would resonate with every American who witnessed the events of 9/11.
This is exactly why America needs to stop white-washing gay people from American history just because they happen to be gay.
Someone should poll the current members of the House and Congress: "Who was Mark Bingham?" I'm pretty sure the results would reveal embarrassing ignorance.

(769 posts)A reality that many Americans think is unreal, not possible or maybe a hoax.
Obviously Carson Daly thought so and made it a joke.
But you can be strong, heroic and gay and still bring your mom some flowers.
Mrs. Hoagland already knows that. But do you?

(51,559 posts)Ive long been a supporter of gay and lesbian rights, and Im saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community, Daly said in a statement.

Hey Daly, here's a suggested apology: "I was a thoughtless, bigoted idiot who made a lame joke at the expense of the LGBT community, and I am particularly sorry to the mother of the hero who so eloquently proved how absolutely wrong I was."
