Court documents prove NOM's plan to divide black, gay communities

The National Organization for Marriage's unsuccessful fight to skirt Maine's financial disclosure laws just backfired majorly on the group by revealing a distasteful part of its game plan to stop marriage equality.

According to a court document that was uploaded online, NOM specifically worked to drive a wedge between the black and gay community on the subject of marriage equality:

3. Not a Civil Right Project

The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks - two key democratic constituencies. We aim to find, equip, energize and connect African American spokespeople for marriage; to develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; and to provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots. No politician wants to take up and push an issue that splits the base of the party.

NOM has portrayed whatever African-American opposition to marriage equality its spotlighted as spontaneous attempts by leaders and members of the black community to keep its civil rights legacy from supposedly being "tainted" by a comparison to gay equality.

But now we see that there was nothing spontaneous about this. It was a cynically planned effort by NOM - which the organization continues to exploit - in order to drive a wedge between blacks and gays.

From what most of us can gather, there are just a handful of donors who may be connected to the Mormon church.

The Knights of Columbus and various diocese are sending millions to NOM.

That $1.4 million donation? According to Zwick, it eclipses the entire amount that the Knights of Columbus gave to fund other charitable efforts, like supporting food banks and food drives.

Apparently loving your neighbor as you love yourself isn't quite as important as fighting gay people, at least when it comes to the Knights of Columbus.

As Zwick notes in the Washington Independent piece, the donation to the National Organization for Marriage "eclipses what the Knights’ Supreme Council spent on some of its own charitable programs — such as its new effort supporting food banks or its total spending on education initiatives.

I can't fathom their particular interest in this issue. How does it affect them?

Do they fear their members, who they seem to keep on a very tight leash, are going to forego heterosexual marriage all of a sudden?

The Mormons in the past, and certainly with their fringe groups like Warren Jeffs, have had trouble with interpretations of marriage. So why?

I just don't get it, and I'm looking at how they want to use it for money, power and control. If they don't have gays in their church, why work to influence secular marriage laws?

We've had the Catholics, the Protestant evangelicals, etc. sticking their nose in this issue. Are they joining forces with Mormons, perhaps to establish a joint theocracy?

President Carter just left the Southern Baptists over their continued attacks on women. He didn't cite just them, though. While he was POTUS, the EEOC was strong and protected employment, etc. based on race, gender, country of origin, sexual orientation.

That was how this country was moving, along with going green and protecting the environment. We've been on a slide to the Dark Ages since Reagan.

Organizations that intentionally try increase racism and homophobia are offensive to me.
