Opinions about gratuitous film sex/heterosexuality.

I was watching "The Code" the other night with Antonio Banderas and Radha Mitchell, and there are a couple sex scenes with lots of exposed flesh and simulated intercourse, and reflecting a bit, it occurs to me that these scenes added absolutely NOTHING towards advancing the plot - it seems like it was just an excuse to add something that would titillate viewers and make a mediocre film seem edgy. And it failed at that, IMO.

But you know, why does Hollywood think we all enjoy watching those kinds of encounters? It's a heist film, not a soft porn film.

I just resent having that kind of gutter display imposed upon me where 1) it's pointless and unnecessary; and 2) I find it offensive.

Your thoughts?

Actually, you're just like me...they're trying to push buttons and it doesn't advance the plot one big...Hollywood is pretty much bankrupt on ideas and storylines so we should expect more of this!

when you decided to watch an Antonio Banderas movie at all. If you started cutting scenes that add nothing to the plot, most modern movies would be about 20 minutes.

What would you propose as a solution to this issue? Directors not include pointless scenes or things that some viewers may find offensive?

Yeah, I have to say, he certainly wasn't as fresh as he once was.

I don't know if I have suggestions, but heteros certainly feel they have the right to criticize our Brokeback Mountains - turn about is VERY fair play, IMHO.

but in the end, it really comes down to either targeting only those artists (directors, actors, whatever) that you know you will like in advance (and maybe missing out on some good stuff) or having to wade through all the Hollywood crap that everyone else does.

Actually showing a "steamy sex scene" is almost never important to any plot, which is why so often it's referred to as "artistic", which seems to have a modern translation in films as "fun to watch but not relevant to the story". It's much the same as watching stuff blow up.

(Literally.)

Sex sells. People like movies that "titillate" them. The same is very true (if not more so) in a lot of LGBT themed movies.

They show pretty much everything on a woman's body, but act like a man's penis is taboo or something, most of the time. The list of R-rated movies where more than just a short flash of a penis is included would be a short one even to this day. I can still remember the first time they filmed a man's butt in an R-rated movie. Oh, how everyone talked about that.

I agree with the equal skin time idea, wholeheartedly.

No matter your orientation, the 'wrong' people on screen expressing intimacy is going to be a turn off that has a chance of feeling offensive. When I say that, I mean that to a heterosexual person, a man and woman on the screen that are the complete opposite of what you find attractive in intimate situations is going to be a turnoff, likewise two men or two women who are not attractive to you. I think this goes for a gay man, gay woman, etc.

I had long discussions with people about this when QAF (Queer As Folk) came on TV and I tried to explain this to hetero folk who told me they were offended. I thought the series was excellent and watched every episode. While I didnt find the intimate scenes stimulative, I was glad that the LGBT community had such programming that attempted to appeal to them for a change and thought that was a positive step. Not every display of intimacy on screen has to appeal to you was how I phrased it to 'offended' hetero friends. Most of them got it.

a lot of that was over-the-top, but much of it was, IME, very true. And so watching it was both appealing and thought-provoking.

Gratuitous sex is gratuitous sex.
Two hot young gay men, two hot, firm lesbian chicks....reality is- if we were to film ourselves,it probably wouldn't sell too many films.

As long as there is love outside of the sex...(I am reminded of when Banderas kissed Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia&quot

I agree that many of them do nothing to advance the plot of the movie.

The number one rule in Hollywood seems to be that sex sells. That's their idea anyhow. They will add sex scenes anywhere they can. I swear it has to be to buy time and keep the movie from being too short, at least partly. I think most of it is that if an actor or actress is considered sexy, they will use that to bring in viewers who are attracted to that actor or actress. It is to make the money back for the money they spent making the movie, I think, or something to that effect.

I remember when even seeing male buttocks unclothed in an R rated movie was considered risque and oh, how everyone talked about it. Back then, you never saw a penis in a movie. I always thought they should show more than just breasts and asses. Damn, if they are going to add a sex scene in a movie, make it worth watching or don't do it at all.

What gets me is the end of the world type movies. They will always have two strong male characters arguing over their different ideas while the world is falling apart around them. There is always the female character that tries to get them to stop fighting and says something sexual to each one of them to get their minds off their territorial pissing war with each other. Then, and only then, they stop fighting and realize the spaceship they are on or whatever is on damn fire and maybe they need to do something about it. At the end, one of them gets the girl and the movie ends.

Do what now? The movie was supposed to be about some end of the world event and they end it as a damn romance? Those really get to me. Those are the ones where I don't need to see romance or sex. The Earth is about to implode and they are fighting over a woman and having territorial pissing wars with each other.

So, even though I am not offended by sex scenes in movies:

Show something more than those same breasts that were in the last movie and those same butt cheeks that were in the last movie too. Do it right or don't do it at all.

Don't put sex scenes in movies that don't need them to advance the plot, especially in end of the world movies where the Earth is falling apart around them. It just doesn't work there. It takes away from the suspense, in those cases, if anything.

On edit:
Maybe, I am just wishing for better acting and better plots in porn movies(gay, straight, all porn, really), come to think of it, lol. I don't know, but that would make for some really great movies, imo.

I would definitely have way less shots of the guy's face. It's sex. We know it feels good. Showing the guy's face at that moment is not highlighting his acting abilities, lol. I would rework the camera angles in some situations too.
