Just How Wrong Can Gay Cure Camps Go? Sometimes They Can Be Murder

Two men who ran what was dubbed a manliness camp in South Africa have been convicted of murder, assault and child abuse after the horrendous death of an adolescent who was supposed to be in their care.
The men, Alex de Koker and Michael Erasmus, ran the Echo Wild Game Rangers camp which purported to turn adolescent boys into real men. What that meant for 15-year old Raymond Buys, Johannesburgs Vereeniging Regional Court heard, was him being punched, struck with a spade, a stick, and a piele wapper (60cm-long rubber pipe), as well as being forced to eat soap powder, pick up his own feces with his mouth and [being] kicked and slapped while unconscious to wake him up, The Citizen reports. Buys was often beaten so badly he would be unable to walk, and when he attempted suicide he was chained to his bed at night so that he could not make another attempt on his own life.
As I wrote back in 2013 at the start of the trial, Koker routinely charged parents R22,000 (approximately $2,451) to take their adolescent children who werent considered manly enough or who had gotten into trouble, and house them at his boarding camp on land he owned in Swartruggens, about an hour south of Johannesburg. There, he said he would teach the boys discipline, survival skills, and help them become the men their parents wanted.
