it sucks. I want to believe Dems are better than that.

(45,274 posts)but i don't think 'phobia is exactly an embedded or nourished trait around here.
No doubt we have some, but maybe over time exposure to the dominant ethos of tolerance and acceptance will wear away at that old emotional garbage that belongs to another era.

(231 posts)I'm still fairly new on the site, but I've not seen anything resembling homophobia on DU. In fact, as an openly gay man I've been made to feel quite at home here. So yeah...have I missed something? (Or maybe you're referring to some other "phobia"?)

(4,150 posts)In the beginning, there was something resembling an "evolution of ideas." Yeah, there were some thoughtless people here using language that was less than flattering.
HOWEVER, it seems as if attitudes have evolved over the last 15 years. I don't recall seeing anything blatantly homophobic in a long time, or at least INTENTIONALLY so. . .
I have much more tolerance for the occasional unintentional statement that can be corrected with a, "Hey that is hurtful and nasty." Most people don't intend to be so and are usually repentant and ashamed.

(32,982 posts)I asked the poster to explain to me what s/he meant. A DU jury later voted to hide the comment. The implication that there was something wrong with drag promoted me to ask for an explanation. I feel that Dems should be above the nudge nudge winkwink. We are Democrats, we are better then using a winkwinknudgenudge shaming of transgender people.

(4,150 posts)I am glad you asked what was wrong with drag. . . .
I may be digressing, but I have also noticed that transgender persons are often maligned in many ways. The brouhaha regarding bathrooms is truly a non-issue.
I had a friend in San Francisco who was legally female (recognized by the state as female and with "female" noted on drivers license) but still anatomically male but on hormones. One would never know she had not had sexual reassignment surgery, and stalls in women's bathrooms typically have doors. I sincerely doubt that anybody would make a fuss about her using the women's room. On the contrary, if she had shown up in the men's room, there would have been hell to pay!

So, to speak plainly, yes, some Democrats like sugar on their porridge.
