Gay List of the "Best Places to Work 2015" Is Full of Corporate Monsters

Every year, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) -- the oldest surviving gay lobbying group--puts out a "Corporate Equality Index," (CEI) listing all the corporations that are alleged to be friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans people. In turn, HRC compiles the top-scorers from the CEI to form the list of the "best places to work."

A strange list of qualifications--including meaningless gestures like having an "employee group or diversity council," whatever that means--is used to score companies on the CEI. But from what I can tell, earning a perfect score doesn't substantially require much more than a non-discrimination hiring policy and a vague willingness to tolerate employees who take an interesting in wearing t-shirts with the company logo at Pride parades. Within the scoresheet, there's no consideration of the larger picture of a corporation's actions, its misdeeds, or how working for a company on this list oftentimes means working directly for, or closely with, enemies of equality.

While HRC says it costs nothing to be on the list, this whole thing looks like a red carpet rolled-out for donations to the HRC. One of the criteria for inclusion on the list is philanthropic support of at least one LGBT organization or event--should I just make the check out to "H-R-C"?

Your corporation will lose 25 points if you give "to organizations whose primary mission includes advocacy against LGBT equality." But no points lost for funding legislators who run on a right-wing platform of social conservativism, by far the bigger threat. By enshrining anti-gay bias into law or using the bully pulpit to demean LGBT people, a Congressional legislator can do a hell of a lot more damage than an organization that just happens to be anti-gay.

but I get the impression that a lot of companies just don't care. Even those with other restrictive policies, like testing for pot use.

It's my opinion that society in general doesn't have any objections, it's mostly far-right religious folk and conservative politicians catering to a vocal constituency that are driving oppression. That's not to say that even accepting people aren't a bit 'phobic around gay people.

Again, that's just my impression from talking to folks I know. I haven't really known many gay people since I worked the bar-scene back in the '80s. I use to get hit on some when I was a bouncer. I was always flattered by the attention and nobody was ever pushy.

I hang with a lesbian couple that belong to the same animal-rights group sometimes, at group functions, and a single lesbian that's a friend of my wife. I'm not very social these days, so...

Just goes to show you that they can offer us token BS and still be really shitty organizations to work for. Perhaps the HRC should take desirability to work there for LGBT people as an aspect of the ranking as well?? Just because they are allegedly pro-gay, doesn't mean I necessarily want to work there.

Actually, some big companies really are "gay friendly."

I work for one of the largest printing-book making companies in the world. For over a decade now they have not only had a non-discrimination policy and "promoted diversity," they have offered full benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and family medical leave) to what are termed "domestic partners." And they enforce the policies. Not long ago an employee I know of was terminated--on the spot--for calling another employee a faggot.

I don't claim any of this is done out of some corporate sense of fairness. It's a bottom-line decision made by execs who are smart enough to realize that if a skilled employee or applicant has a choice between working for a company that will put his/her partner on the health plan or working for one that won't, or a company that might fire them if they are "out" -- they will offer what it takes to get that employee.

I imagine that my company also supports and contributes to politicians they believe will support policy measures that benefit the corporation, and that some of those politicians may also have an anti-gay agenda, but that is true of just about any large corporation.
