US: Michigan Republicans pass bill permitting discrimination against gays

Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives have passed a bill that would permit religious people to discriminate on the grounds of sexuality.

The state’s House passed HB 5958, known as the ‘Religious Freedom and Restoration Act’ – which claims to “limit governmental action that substantially burdens a person’s exercise of religion”

The bill, which effectively exempts religious people from anti-discrimination laws, was passed along party lines, by a vote of 59-50.

It will now head to the Senate – also controlled by Republicans – and then to the state’s Republican Governor Rick Snyder. It is unlikely to face significant challenges from either.

Their 'religious freedom' gives them the right to discriminate? I'm watching these sickos ruin my state, inch by inch. I drive on crumbling roads every day, I watch as they store dangerous hazardous waste right next to our drinking water, I watch as they ignore the threat to our Great Lakes from invasive species because it might "cost too much", and I watch as they get rid of incentives to bring a huge industry to our state permanently because the movie industry doesn't automatically support Republicans.

I lived in Michigan until I was 18 years old and for a brief time in the late 80's. It is one of the most beautiful states in the union. I loved going on nature walks there is a lot of unspoiled or should I say there was a lot of unspoiled territory. I listened to people talking politics obsessively. I had a feeling the state was going to go south very soon if it hadn't already back in '83. I skedaddled to Wisconsin to get a job then ended up moving to Minnesota with my SO shortly after that.

and the Democratic Party in Michigan is so limp and lifeless, I despair of change. Snyder is the ultimate snake in the grass...coddling the U of M cohort while screwing everyone.

- need to be shot down.

Religion is the oldest, most profitable marketing scam on the planet.

What they do is, sell a product: salvation, which costs absolutely nothing to make, and sell it to gullible people looking for answers that science can't entirely explain while the organization grows by assimilating many cultures and traditions to spread it's viral poison of guilt, greed, shame and selfishness.

Martin Luther formed a new church because the Pope was corruptly selling slices of Heaven known as "indulgences". The Pope was on the take from both poor and wealthy supporters.

They must go to there ALEC little getaways and go down to the bar and just think this stuff up.
You have to really wonder why they would vote for this bill, which they did----amazing.
To deflect the total failure of a democracy in the state.
Everyday the newspapers and the local media should be challenging these wing nuts.

They are passing bills to screw every typical Democrat. Unions, gays, atheists, seniors, minorities, single mothers, welfare recipients, working class, the disabled, and of course women. Bill after bill, they target every traditional blue voter.
