My niece is separating from her spouse

A lesbian couple; We love them both.

My niece is fine. Her spouse not so much.

It's heartbreaking to see that there are no guarantees even among same sex couples.

I had hoped that, somehow, same sex couples might be more stable.

Sad to see they're just as messed up as the rest of us; Just regular ordinary people that make mistakes just like the rest of us.

1. Been there, done that

Divorce, that is, not involving a same gender relationship, but I'm sure the feelings of failure and hurt are probably much the same. All you can do is be there for her, and reassure her that just because a relationship fails, it doesn't mean that the people who contracted for that relationship are themselves failures.

2. It hits harder, when you've been there, like you and I.

I felt like such a failure when I finally said enough after 30 years of marriage.

5. Happened to my cousin, there were kids involved, too. Her partner 'strayed' and found someone else.

There are no guarantees in this world.

It was a fairly civil break up but I think the hurt was pretty deep.
