Archbishop: Pray for gay marriage judges
August 4, 2014
Amber Hunt
As gay marriage supporters plan rallies in Downtown Cincinnati this week, religious groups are urging those of faith to help guide through prayer the three appellate judges who will weigh the fate of same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Kentucky and two other states.
Archbishop Dennis Schnurr is asking the 475,000 Catholics in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to pray for Judges Jeffrey S. Sutton and Deborah L. Cook and Senior Judge Martha Craig Daughtrey. The judges comprise the appellate panel that on Wednesday will hear challenges to same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Michigan.
In a statement emailed to hundreds of thousands of Catholics in 19 counties stretching from Cincinnati to Celina, Schnurr said that Ohio's bishops strongly supported the gay marriage ban in 2004, when more than 60 percent of voters made it law.
"Traditional marriage, the union of one man and one woman for life, is the cradle of the family, which is the basic building block of society," said Schnurr, who suggested an "appropriate prayer" would be the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Prayer in Defense of Marriage....

(19,964 posts)Yep, this is the same guy who came up with those horrid contracts that have led some Cincinnati teachers to either quit or be fired. (See http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024933175 and http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024793146 ). But in addition to that gem, Schnurr is also known for his campaign against the contraception mandate and gay rights, the support for which he calls "intrinsic evils" as opposed to things like war and poverty, where he leaves maneuvering room for individual judgment.
Here's a look at Schnurr's political self, where he makes it pretty obvious who he was endorsing for President... plus those comments about "intrinsic evil".

But stopping short of an endorsement isnt easy when one candidate, Obama, clearly supports the health reform law and the other, Romney, clearly opposes it.
Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis Schnurr offers no blessing or endorsement in a letter hes sending to Catholics later this month. He does, however, say actions that threaten traditional marriage and religious liberty are intrinsic evils.
The implication for Catholics is that support for gay marriage and the health insurance mandate, which the church considers a threat to religious liberty, would amount to supporting an act of evil akin to abortion.
The choice of words is important because intrinsic evils must always be opposed, while decisions about how best to prevent war or poverty can be left to an individuals prudential judgment.

(19,964 posts)Cincy is the capital of conservative Catholicism and they are mustering a lot of their troops for a protest tomorrow. I'm hoping someone from DU can give us some firsthand reporting but if not, I'll be following the proceedings via the websites for the local TV channels.
