Just Before Death, Westboro Baptist Church Founder Accepted Gay People Says Grandson

“Fred W. Phelps, my grandfather, came out in support of the Equality House before he was voted out of Westboro Baptist Church,” Zach Phelps, 23, reportedly told Aaron Jackson, the founder and head of Planting Peace.

The comments were posted to the Facebook pages of Equality House and Michael Knote, CEO & Founder of the wildly popular Have A Gay Day, who writes, “You may not believe it but it’s what was told to me by Aaron Jackson, the man that runs the Equality House and Planting Peace.”

...“Specifically,” Phelps’ message continues, “on the day that he was excommunicated, he stood outside of the front door of the church (but not within anyone’s earshot but a few members of WBC who happened to be in the immediate vicinity)… I say, he spoke words to this effect to the Equality House: ‘You are good people.’”

I feel like he had a change of heart after my grandmother nearly passed away, and he felt the pangs of loss … he waited for news of her every day and night while she was in intensive care. I think this triggered a chain reaction whereby he developed great empathy for others… which would explain why he would support Planting Peace’s anti-suicide and anti-bullying platforms, and their charities across the world.

And now we know why he was kicked out of the church, if it's true of course. I'd like to think it is, that even the worst bigot can change. I suppose we'll never really know.

His conscience isn't our problem. His behavior was our problem.

As long as they are focusing on their FUD, that discombobulates them. If they aren't certain, they're vulnerable to having their minds changed!

Talk about too little, too late. If he really felt that way, he should have said something publicly before his death and he should have offered apologies to all the people that he condemned over the years. Having your "change of heart" reported after your death does nothing to make amends for the hatred and pain you have spread throughout your lifetime.

I think Zach has a problem with grandpa. This is his way of tainting his memory. Not his way of softening his grandfathers image for everyone else. Because, seriously who is going to believe this?

This is a common theme in Chick tracts: you can talk shit about God all your life, yell "I believe! Hallelujah!" as the truck is bearing down on you, and go to heaven.

We're looking at one of two things: a Fred Deathbed Conversion or, as posted upthread, an attempt to discredit him in the eyes of their imagined millions of supporters. If it's an attempt to rehabilitate his image it won't work--way too many people know Phelps' decades of hate.
