I watched a documentary on Youtube last week -

"Montana Meth".

It was dark and gloomy. People smoking and injecting meth, destroying their lives. During the first half, I was sympathetic to the fact that these are drug addicts who are where they are due somewhat to circumstances beyond their control.

Then, the subjects targeted gay people for scorn, in the familiar way that some minorities in America have traditionally done, pointing, laughing, and suggesting, "I might be bad, but at least I'm not gay."

At that point, I really lost all sympathy. In fact, I started questioning what the hell am I doing even watching this exploitation doc-film? Waste of time. These are lives that are already lost, and plenty of gay people who just want to be left alone who appear in better documentaries, who make much more sympathetic subjects, who do NOT use racism or xenophobia to elbow out other minorities.

One of the reasons that this particular prejudice has such a long shelf-life is that roughly 90% of the population can... at any one time or in anyone place...make that particular claim.

No matter how pathetic, dismal, corrupt, mendacious, etc. their own existence is... they can always comfort themselves with he knowledge that they are "better" ( or better OFF, in some cases) than someone else; i.e. than the members of some other demographic.

This holds true for a whole slew of other self-identified groups; not just meth users.

"I could be worse. At least I'm not gay." They get brownie points w. some imagined and demented god for their mainstream sexual orientation.
