Russian gay activist Alexeyev has huge new anti-Semitic meltdown on Facebook, Twitter

Russian gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev, who until now was considered Russia’s top lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocate, appears to have ended his political career tonight in a series of anti-Semitic Facebook and Twitter posts that have even his most ardent supporters calling out his ongoing anti-Semitism.

I’d reported earlier on Alexeyev’s anti-Semitic social media posts last week, and on his earlier run-in with charges of anti-Semitism. Last week, in an apparent fit of ire against a (Jewish) man who penned an op ed in OUT magazine critical of him, Alexeyev retweeted comments calling the author a “jewish pig” and “israeli monkey,” and calling OUT magazine a “jewish slut magazine that supports jews and their filthy faggotry propaganda.” Alexeyev then tweeted and posted on Facebook his own comments about Jewish vodka being made from sperm.

Today things got worse.

In apparent anger over cancellation of his participation in a conference call hosted by human rights group Human Rights First tomorrow, Alexeyev responded via Twitter and Facebook with a slew of hateful anti-Jewish comments, since he is now convinced that “the Jewish mafia” did him in, rather than his own rank prejudice.

Alexeyev talked about how “yids” are trying to take over the world, and how they’re now as bad as Nazi collaborators. (“Yid” is a slur for “Jew,” based on the word “Yiddish,” commonly used by anti-Semites.)

This breaks my heart. And can someone explain to me why a gay rights advocate would refer to "OUT Magazine" as "filthy faggotry propaganda"?!?

I know that anti-Semitism is widespread in Russia, but this is very odd. Perhaps he has emotional problems that would ideally have precluded him from a position of leadership. Either way, the Russian LGBT movements' rejection of his statements would be very important, especially to prevent damage among the minority of Russians that are receptive to a pro-gay message.

However, as you stated, anti-Semitism is well-woven into Russia. It is sad to see someone who is supposed to be fighting for GLBT rights turn into a raging bigot, but then again, Jews are always a popular target.

Some people I know will resort to any tool at all to attack someone if they are pissed off. That magazine must have REALLY pissed him off for some reason, and so he pulled all this crap out from nowhere, caring not one bit who he could offend in the process. I'll have to look into it now because I'm curious.

Unfortunately, the gay rights movement in Russia has been very marginal to any of the established political forces. Even more so than in the US in, say, the 1950s. I think that makes for a situation in which kookery is more likely - you get some dynamic personalities come to the fore that might be a little nutty.

However, my understanding is he has always had an anti-Semitic streak, which cost him at least one conference. To date, he has never been so...shall we call it, blatant.

or the vice-versa situation.

It completely boggles my mind how anyone who is part of a group that is targeted by hate, can turn around and spew hatred against other groups... It completely defies logic. I'd think anyone who's part of any group that's on the receiving end of hatred and bias would be more understanding of others who face hatred and bias.

Hate is not a "pay-forward" thing.

Nobody can improve their own situation by stomping across the backs of others.

It appears to me that this lack of empathy is prevalent among conservatives.

I've never in my life heard anyone called a "bleeding heart conservative".
