Singer Michelle Shocked stuns fans with anti-gay rant

Singer Michelle Shocked, perhaps best known for her 1990s alternative folk-rock tunes including "Anchorage," stunned her fans at a San Francisco concert on Sunday night with an anti-homosexuality rant, according to several sources.

"When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will the the downfall of civilization and Jesus will come back," she said, wrote concert attendee and reviewer James Patterson from The Bay Area Reporter. "I believe the Bible is the word of God."

Though her first hour-plus set at Yoshi's at the Fillmore went off without incident, at one point she paused to read some tweets and, after hearing a request for a gospel song, said "I love me some Jesus." After an intermission, she returned for the second set and began her much-discussed rant to the audience. Then, after offering up a prayer in Spanish and English, she told the crowd, "You are going to leave here and tell people 'Michelle Shocked said God hates f------s.'"

Management ended the show after that, according to Patterson, cutting off her microphone and stage lights, though Shocked "continued to sing for her few remaining fans," he noted.

Michelle Shocked delivers homophobic rant, surprises world by still headlining concerts

Michelle Shocked, the folk singer who became famous in the late ’80s/early ’90s as the one who isn't Meshell Ndegeocello, went off on a homophobic tirade at a recent San Francisco concert, leaving thousands surprised that Michelle Shocked is still playing concerts. The incident occurred at a venue called Yoshi’s, which featured the unthinkable act of a Michelle Shocked headlining gig in the year 2013, interrupted by the somewhat more predictable anti-gay vitriol from a born-again Christian, which Shocked has claimed to be since the mid-’90s.

“I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry,” Shocked reportedly said, noting she’d just come from a prayer meeting of people convinced that the end times were nigh “because Prop. 8 is going to lead to ministers marrying gay people with a rifle to the head.” It's a scenario that probably sounds hilariously irrational, were the fact that Michelle Shocked is still packing them in not some indicator that we live in an uncertain age where anything can happen, even ministers being forced to let everyone get gay-married at gunpoint.

People can be schizophrenic but asymptomatic. And regardless, she had the presence of mind to interact with the audience, even asking for 'donations' at the very end, as she anticipated being stiffed by Yoshi's.

She could very well be a kind of Ted Haggard 'ex-gay' or ex-liberal, or maybe a better example would be Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, who later in life turned anti-choice and coincidentally ( ) fundamentalist Xtian.

Yet, I've seen the 'mental illness' card get played in almost all these discussions. Is there any basis for making that claim?

of schizophrenia/mental illness, though, no snark intended.

I'm not a psychiatrist or mental health professional, but I did study psychology and mental illness in college, and there is nothing in what she said or did here that would lead me to think that she was exhibiting that.

It might not be pleasant to face it, but some people really DO betray their fans or admirers.

I mentioned Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade before, and if you read the wiki on her, it's scary - I wasn't aware of all the similarities between her life and how Shocked's life trajectory is headed, but there are a LOT of parallels.

I mean, crazy artistic types communicate in crazy artistic ways, she might have been using shorthand, or the inner Mormon may have risen up within. When I first heard of the maelstrom, I thought something wasn't quite right about it all.
