former denver mayor says gay marriage next step
Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb on Saturday confirmed the fears of some Republicans, saying civil unions aren't enough and the next step for same sex-couples is gay marriage.
Webb, who served three terms as mayor, reminded Coloradans of his long history on behalf of civil rights when he received the Colorado Democratic Party's Lifetime Achievement Award.
As a state representative, he was in his 30s when he introduced the first bill to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a state holiday. That same year, 1975, Webb introduced a bill to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. He had no idea then that his son, Keith, was gay.
"We continue to fight for the civil rights of all people. The civil unions is only one a step toward equality for the (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community," Webb told a sell-out crowd at the party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner. "Then we go for the next step."
