Simultaneous to Obama's win in 2008 was the devastating blow of Proposition 8 passing in California. I felt rage on two levels: one was the obvious mistreatment of my LGBT friends, but also because it stole their ability to revel in this historic moment and left them to feel defeated.
I, for one, never could fully embrace the celebration when I knew there was such a horrendous miscarriage of justice.
But this year, MY STATE, my beautiful state of Maryland put gay marriage to the ultimate test, the popular vote, and it won. Not only is gay marriage legal here because the legislators said so, now it can never be repealed. I am so proud.
And this year I celebrate fully!

(8,462 posts)I know somewhat how you feel. While MN didn't adopt marriage equality, we did reject putting bias into our Constitution. First state to be offered the opportunity to do so, to say "No thanks".
