http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_VATICAN_GAY_MARRIAGE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-11-10-09-41-21VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican is digging in after gay marriage initiatives scored big wins this week in the U.S. and Europe, vowing to never stop insisting that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.
In a front-page article in Saturday's Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the Vatican spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don't now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.
The Vatican media blitz came after three U.S. states approved same-sex marriage by popular vote, Spain upheld its gay marriage law and France pushed ahead with legislation that could see gay marriage legalized early next year.

(2,322 posts)...such obsessive focus on what is, essentially, irrelevant to the spirit of Christ, will, I suspect, cause more than a few Catholics to wonder if this faith still speaks for them. As for non-Catholics, the more the Vatican tries to stick its nose into the secular realm, the less credibility and respect it will be given. No one wants any one religion dictating secular laws.
And saying things like this: "In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the Vatican spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don't now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well." Is just fucking stupid. Like one has anything to do with the other. But what makes it especially stupid is that Catholicism is built on holy text in which the majority of by-gone religious leaders were polygamous! How many frigging wives did King Solomon have? King David?
Maybe after gays are allowed to marry, the polygamists will come out and demand their right to marry more than one person. And if they do, so what? As those who engage in it probably won't be Catholics, what does the Catholic church care? Islamics can have more than one wife. I don't see the Vatican screaming and shouting about them.
I'm tired of this. Anyone playing in your backyard must play by your rules, but that doesn't mean you get to dictate the rules in anyone else's backyard, and most especially not in the public park where we're all allowed to play.

(3,177 posts)They can do what they damned well please (and they are utterly damned for all time AFAIC).
The instant they start trying to change National Law and the social contract between equal persons, they have crossed a line and deserve only our utter contempt.
One of their commandments is "Thou shalt not bear false witness", the god-damned vatican can do nothing else as long as its vicious, privileged, overly-powerful drivel continues to terrify its flock into compliance.
