(I could not find any stats/info for the increases in 2011 and 2012 to date. If anyone has, or knows where I can find this information, please post the source for me, if you don't mind. Thanks!)
Violent crimes against LGBT individuals up 13%, report says
According to just-released statistics from the FBI, 1,528 hate crimes were committed against people because of their sexual orientation in 2010, up from 1,436 in 2009. As Instinct Magazine points out, a similar number of hate crimes were committed based on religion (1,552), but only 7.2 percent of them were attacks against Christianity. This undermines the self-victimizing claims of groups like the National Organization for Marriage, who claim that anti-equality Christians are more significantly oppressed.
Please keep in mind that there are a large number of hate crimes against LGBTIQ persons that are not reported as well.
Public expressions of hatred and intolerance by hate groups are causing suffering not only to LGBTIQ persons and other minorities, but to innocent members of the dominant group who don't appreciate these groups that spread hate as well.
The entire agenda of every hate group is a complete lose-lose negative agenda for everyone, an agenda that inspires criminal acts of violence that inflict a great deal of pain, suffering, expense, and injustice to the victims of hate crimes, the families of the victims of hate crimes, and to our entire national community as well.
Not to mention the great expense of taxpayer money incurred by having to prosecute the inordinate number of hate crimes committed by unstable persons influenced by the hate so publicly and proudly expressed by these groups.
Hate groups are a national shame and embarrassment. As the debate over same sex marriage grows, the anti-LGBT rhetoric of hate groups grows proportionately, leading to significant progressive increases in violent attacks upon LGBTIQ persons each year.
Hate groups could go a long way toward ending this type of violence forever simply by stopping their rhetoric, and ceasing their support of anti-equality hate legislation.
That is, if they truly desire to end the violence, of course.
If the individuals that comprise the memberships of these hate groups have an overwhelming need to hate someone, they should just keep their hate to themselves. It's truly disgusting that they need to band together for the express purpose of spreading all this hatred and intolerance that only leads to unwarranted harm of all kinds being inflicted on innocent people.

When all these figures are taken into account, it doesn't paint a pretty picture. Yes we have come a long way, but we are by no means close to being where we should be.
