This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a work of art that reflects the worldwide scope and personal impact of the AIDS pandemic.
As part of the commemoration, the University of Iowa Digital Studio for the Public Humanities (DSPH) is working to make the quilt more available and accessible to people around the world.

(32,610 posts)The picture from 1996 is beautiful and sad. I made the trip to D.C. for the event. It is just overwhelming and you experience such a range of emotions. Because I had attended the event in 1987 I kept thinking about the increase in size; the increase in the number of panels representing unnecessary lost lives and felt so angry about the waste of a generation.
As I was starting to leave the area I noticed a crowd swarming and walked over. It was Al and Tipper Gore. They had come quietly and without an entourage. Everyone was reacting with such emotion and most of us were crying with gratitude. Such a change from the Reagan Bush years...
